Life long dream results in Canada Trip

Louisiana Sportsman

Todays GeeseOur waterfowling trip to Canada was everything I dreamed it could be.

We arrived much later in Edmonton, in the province of Alberta, on the first day due to our "terrorist" issues and the airlines. Got a few hours of sleep and started the day with an incredible breakfast at the bed and breakfast in the small town of Ferintosh (about 150 people)where we would spend our days.

In the wee hours of the morning we drove out to the fields, which were either cut wheat, barley or peas, and set up about 10-12 dozen full body and Canada goose shells. We lounged in goose shells that flipped up to allow for shooting from a sitting position. When flipped down they came to about our waist and had numerous slits in the goose shell so we could see. The Canadas would come in groups of 2 and up to 15. The guides called 'em in close to the decoys and our group of five hunters killed 35 or so Canadas and two ducks. The goose and duck limit is eight each. The whole time we were also able to view thousands upon thousands of ducks lifting off from a small lake not far off. Apparently we were not in their flight path that day.

For the evening we hunted two small potholes and killed about 25 ducks. The next morning was to be the best waterfowling experience I've ever had. Lying in dry agricultural fields we had literally thousands of ducks, Canada and specklebelly geese working our spread at the same time. What a glorious sight and shoot!! Obviously, much carnage was involved.

Field of GeeseThat afternoon we again hunted small potholes and witnessed clouds of ducks responding to our calls as we finished off our limits.

Last morning....rain, and lots of it. We hunted in camo hay bales which kept us fairly dry while hundreds of ducks worked our spread. We limited on ducks and also killed 3 Canadas. Its quite a sight to have 50 ducks decoying while another 500 work in on top of them.
